Lucy and Martijn's relaxed day at Groomes Country House -a wedding venue amongst green rolling hills on the Surrey Hampshire Border...

When I met Lucy and Martijn for a coffee and chat about their day, they described their wedding as laid back, natural and really relaxed. They described it as "an English wedding for their Dutch guests to see, but nothing stiff and formal". The couple emphasised they wanted it to be a really relaxed day and easy for guests, mostly a youngish crowd, who want to enjoy the day, catch up and party. This all sounded great to me; it pretty much described my shooting style and I managed to get some really lovely photos of people just mingling and chatting, sometimes posing for the camera, sometimes looking at the person they were speaking to. I feel it's good to get a mix of shots too; some close cropped, some wider shots, and capture the day as it unfolds, what makes it unique to the couple and all the reactions and emotion.

I arrived at Groomes a little early on the day to potter around to familiarise myself with how everything had been laid out, capturing little details as I went; the flowers, rings, special wedding biscuits waiting for guests to arrive... I especially loved the children's book theme Lucy and Martijn had chosen for their tables -so cute and original! When the boys had all arrived, I did some nice natural portraits of them before seeing how the girls were getting on. I try to not get in the way during bridal prep and only capture the make up shots if clients request it (it's your day so completely your choice), but make sure I get quite a few portraits when everyone is ready and the main details. A friend of Lucy's had handmade a lovely, green beaded belt to go with her wedding dress (perfectly on the green and white colour theme) so I always make sure I grab these kind of special details. I tend to provide clients with all their images in colour and a selection in black and white (I shoot quite a lot so I wouldn't want to overwhelm you with everything in colour and then everything in B&W, but of course this is an option -don't hesitate to ask!).

Taking full advatage of a lovely, sunny British summer day and the beautiful scenery, the whole event was held outside: the wedding ceremony, drinks and canapés, speeches, family groups shots and a few, quick couple's portraits. We only moved inside the marquee for the wedding breakfast. And lots of dancing later!

Groomes is great for guests as it provides flexible wedding packages and lots of options, accommodation in 16th century Grade II listed country residence that manages to have a homely feel, a tranquil setting and lots of outside space. As for a wedding photographer, Groomes Country House is an absolute dream with so many photo opportunities, stunning scenery and friendly, helpful staff. I hope to capture many more wedding at Groomes.
